The BPSW advisory board is composed of accomplished social work educators from both the United States and from countries with BPSW projects operating in them.

Abbas Sirojudina, MSW

Mr. Sirojudina is currently a Fulbright doctoral student in social welfare at the University of California Berkeley. He has been a lecturer in social work at the State Islamic University, Jakarta, and the director of the social welfare foundation for this university. He has translated books by Michael Sherradan and James Midgely into the Indonesian language and has been instrumental in planning several national conferences.

Mr. Sirojudina is part of an internationally funded research program on poverty alleviation strategies in Indonesia and is a consultant to the Indonesian government on poverty alleviation policy. His current research is also focused on integrating social work principles into Islamic relief programs. He received his MSW from McGill University in Canada.

Dr. Florence Vigilante, DSW. MSW, LCSW

Dr. Florence Vigilante, professor emeritus at the Hunter College School of Social Work, is the founding and current editor of The Journal of Teaching in Social Work, a preeminent journal in social work education.

She was the founder and Director of the Hunter College Employees Assistance Program. Her many articles and book chapters focus on, social work assessment, social work practice with learning disabled children and their families, the application of family treatment models in social work practice and social work employees assistance programs.

Dr. Vigilante was awarded the Hunter College President's Award for Service to the College and the Smith College Day-Garrett Award for service to the Smith College.

Dr. James Midgley—Ph.D.

Dr. James Midgley is the Harry and Riva Specht Professor of Public Social Services and former Dean of the School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. He has published widely on international social work and social welfare policy.

His most important books dealing with social work and social welfare in developing countries include:

Social Development: The Developmental Perspective in Social Welfare. Sage, 1995

and

Social Policy for Development (with A. Hall, Sage, 2004). Among other works, Dr. Midgley co-authored, Issues in International Social Work (1997) and Lessons from Abroad: Adapting International Social Welfare Innovations (2004).

Dr. Midgely frequently consults internationally on social welfare policy. In 2005, Dr. Midgley was the key note speaker at a symposium in Indonesia on social development.

Dr. Puji Pujiono, MSW

Dr. Puji Pujiono currently works in Geneva for the United Nations Development Program Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, as an Early Recovery Needs Assessment Advisor.

Dr. Pujiono is profiled frequently in various media and is a well-known social worker in Indonesia. In his capacity as a member of the Governing Board, and a former Chair of the Indonesian Professional Social Work Organization, Dr. Pujiono embodies the true spirit of professional social work. He championed the profession in his work with mainstream organizations where professional social work is not the primary profession. He has held important positions in humanitarian and disaster relief in the United Nations and other international organizations, In Kobe, Japan he was concurrently the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Regional Disaster Response Advisor for East/Southeast Asia. He has also worked as disaster management expert for ASEAN.

Bambang Shergi Laksmono, Ph.D, MS

Dr. Shergi currently holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Science at the University of Indonesia. He is also a professor in the Social Welfare Department.

Dr. Shergi has worked on many projects sponsored by UNDP and USAID. He also is a prolific researcher, working on projects for local and the national Indonesian government. His areas of expert focus are on social welfare research and social planning. In addition to the BPSW advisory board, he is on the Supervisory Board of the SWPRC.
